چکیده
The 30 th anniversary of NCL, the New Zealand controlled environment laboratory, was marked on 20 March 2000. This anniversary opens the fourth decade of service by NCL to researchers in New Zealand and internationally. Looking forward into this decade provides the stimulus for this workshop series, focused on current issues in controlled environment (CE) science. The workshop series is designed to provide a venue to review current CE capability at NCL and abroad and explore applications, requirement, and developments in relation to present and future research directions. Notable issues that provide a background to the workshop series include: S the every-increasing capability and economy of electronic sensing, data acquisition and analytical systems; S use of CE capability to address public concerns about perceived risk associated with field application of genetic technologies to plants S use of CE regimes to enhance understanding of how the root environment contributes to plant performance; S study of ecosystem-process such as plant-to-plant interaction under CE regimes S ready availability of modelling approaches to integrate knowledge of environmental impacts gleaned from a range of CE and field experiments; S the need to enhance the cost-effectiveness of production-oriented plant research S the need to develop and apply methods to transfer quantitatively results achieved under (often) stable CE regimes to the ever-fluctuating natural environment. A subset of these issues (namely, integration, cost-effectiveness, transferability) provide the background to this inaugural workshop focused on how the time-dependence of environmental variation can be used as an experimental variable. The potential to do this is a key feature distinguishing CE facilities from other methods of studying environmental impacts. It is also a use that exploits the full manipulative capability at NCL. Our aim in planning the workshop was to increase awareness of NCL's capabilities in this regard, and at the same time, assist development of CE technical capabilities at NCL towards modes of room operation tailored to study of time-dependent processes. We also wanted to facilitate interaction between researchers who together may find in NCL a convenient and power tool to: • Produce more accurate and precise models for applied decision support systems. • Produce quantitative knowledge of system responses to environmental variation to allow management via novel environmental conditions. • Produce quantitative knowledge of the interaction between environment and gene function The workshop was divided into two sessions. The first surveyed environmental responses with dynamics extending from seconds to months. …

Litter Production Dynamic in relation to Climatic Factors in Tree Plantations
We studied litterfall dynamic of tree plantations in Dez River floodplain, at 14 to 15 years old. The plantations consist of Populus euphratica Oliv., Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh., E. microtheca F. Muell, Acacia farnesiana (L.) Willd., A. salicina Lindl., A. saligna (Labill.) H. Wendl., A. stenophylla Benth. and Dalbergia sissoo Roxb. Litterfall was different between the tree species, and le...
متن کاملEvaluation of Climate Change Impacts on Hydrological Characteristics of Watershed (Case study: Aji- Chai Watershed)
Studying climate change impact on hydrological variables such as runoff has attracted more attention over recent years mainly due to the imposed imbalance in climate system by greenhouse gas emission. Hence, initially in this research, the trend and abrupt changes of hydro – climatic variables were studied using data mining approaches in 18 stations over 40 years (1972-2011) in Aji-Chai waters...
متن کاملEffects of Climate Change on Grassland Biodiversity
There is increasing evidence that the impact of climate change on the productivity of 9 grasslands will at least partly depend on their biodiversity. A high level of biodiversity may confer 10 stability to grassland ecosystems against environmental change, but there are also direct effects of 11 biodiversity on the quantity and quality of grassland productivity. To explain the manifold 12 inter...
متن کاملResponse of vegetation activity dynamic to climatic change and ecological restoration programs in Inner Mongolia from 2000 to 2012
To address devastating land desertification and soil erosion and to improve human well-being, central government in China has implemented a number of ecological restoration programs. It is essential to rigorously monitor the dynamic of vegetation activity and evaluate the effectiveness of these programs, not only to provide scientific support for ecosystem monitoring in arid and semi-arid regio...
متن کاملEcological and evolutionary impacts of changing climatic variability.
While average temperature is likely to increase in most locations on Earth, many places will simultaneously experience higher variability in temperature, precipitation, and other climate variables. Although ecologists and evolutionary biologists widely recognize the potential impacts of changes in average climatic conditions, relatively little attention has been paid to the potential impacts of...
متن کاملThe Study of Most Important Climatic Parameters Influencing on Potato Yield with Climate Change Paradigm (Studied Case, in Kermanshah Province)
Climate change is one of the most important challenges in recent years. Heavy flood, hot weather, early coldness, most of drought replications, risen of sea water level, pests and plant disease ,reducing of ozone layer thickness, global worming ,and melting ices, are cases that introduced climate change issue in recent decades more. Climate is one of the most important factors for crop chang...
